A carbon neutral future from a carbon neutral fuel.

What is Biogas?

Biogas is a renewable source of methane gas, created when organic matter, such as food scraps or livestock manure, breaks down in an oxygen-free environment. This biological process is referred to as Anaerobic Digestion (AD). The main component of biogas is methane, also the key component of natural gas.

How is it used?

Biogas can be used directly to generate electricity or biogas can be captured and cleaned to create biomethane, also known as renewable natural gas (RNG). RNG is interchangeable with conventional natural gas. It is injected into a natural gas distribution system therefore reducing the amount of conventional natural gas required by the utility. Because it is interchangeable with conventional natural gas customers such as households, fleets, and institutions can enjoy the environmental benefits of RNG without having to change any of their appliances.

City of Surrey and FortisBC Partnership

A closed loop organics processing operation collects and processes curbside organic waste from Surrey residents and businesses. RNG produced by the facility is injected into the FortisBC natural gas distribution system.

Starting fall 2020, the co-op will convert manure to 2.3 million cubic meters of biogas a year. This will be converted to RNG and mixed into existing commercial natural gas grid in Quebec.

What are the benefits?

Biogas offers Canadians a solution to helping protect our environment and meet ambitious climate change commitments in an economically sound and sustainable manner.

Where is it in use?

Today in Canada, there are well over 100 operating biogas projects generating renewable electricity and heat, and close to a dozen RNG facilities across Canada. Biogas and RNG projects are operating and being developed across the country by large energy firms, municipalities, farms and small businesses.
